🌾 The Wichita Wind Surge & Their Many Alter Egos

Which is your favorite?

Together With

Good morning, Wichita!

It was so fun to see everyone last night at the Wichita Life Dinner Club after-party. If you haven’t been, I hope to see you next month.

Let's get to it!

The Many Faces of Wichita Wind Surge Baseball

Ackerman Island used to host Wichita Baseball Games

From the early days of the Monrovians, to decades of minor league iterations, to the Wingnuts era at old Lawrence-Dumont (RIP, ole LD), it has truly been a roller coaster.

Before the Wichita Wind Surge took up the hometown mantle, the Wichita Wingnuts were our go-to team for America’s pastime from 2008 to 2018. If you ever sat along the third base line at Lawrence-Dumont on a sticky July night, you know the vibe.

Then came the reset.

Ole LD was torn down and replaced with a shiny new $75 million ballpark, initially named Riverfront Stadium (because yes, it sits… near the river).

Wichita was due for a new era of baseball whether we liked it or not.

All we knew at the time was that a new affiliated team was relocating from New Orleans, where they were known as the New Orleans Baby Cakes. That name alone set expectations sky high.

After months of teasing, the announcement came…would it be the River Riders, the 29ers or the Lineman…. drum roll please..the team would be called the Wichita Wind Surge.

Some people loved it. Some people hated it. Wichita had opinions, as we always do.

Personally, I have always liked the name. Minor league baseball is supposed to be fun. This is a league that includes the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, and the Rocket City Trash Pandas. Serious branding is not the point.

I have embraced the Wind Surge name and so should you. That's my political stance.

That being said, the team at the Wind Surge continue to bring in new, fun, funky, and fresh alter egos and we want to give a little background into those as we approach the upcoming season (only a month out)!

Turbo Tubs

The first alter ego to arrive for the Wichita Wind Surge was Turbo Tubs, unveiled ahead of the 2022 season.

The team announced that during the 2022 season they would transform into the Turbo Tubs for every Thursday home game (with the exception of a Cinco de Mayo celebration). The idea was simple. If Thursday was going to be a recurring theme night at Riverfront Stadium, it might as well have a personality.

But Turbo Tubs was more than just a goofy alternate name. This was a name for Wichita, by Wichita.

Cowboy Bathtub Races are still held at Riverfest, no longer with porcelain tubs because where would we even find those?

The logo features a porcelain bathtub outfitted with wind sails and jet engines racing ahead.. The idea pays homage to bathtub races that were once held on the Arkansas River for Riverfest. If that sounds ridiculous, that is because it is, but it is also part of the kind of quirky local lore that makes minor league baseball fun.

The details go even deeper. The captain of the Turbo Tubs is inspired by the troll statue along the riverwalk near the Keeper of the Plains, a nod to the creature that have become part of the city’s public art along the water. Even the color palette draws inspiration from the vivid sunsets that stretch across the Midwest sky.

Funny enough, I was just talking to someone the other day about how they just learned about the troll.

Tumba Vacas

Next came Tumba Vacas in 2022 as part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversión initiative.

Copa de la Diversión is a league-wide program that celebrates Hispanic and Latino communities through special team identities, uniforms, and themed game nights. For Wichita, the concept was rooted in the region’s history and culture.

Wichita sits at the crossroads of several traditions. The Arkansas River runs through the city, while the historic Chisholm Trail once carried cattle through the region as cowboys and ranchers moved herds north across the plains. Those histories intersect with a vibrant Hispanic and Latin community that has helped shape the culture of the city for generations.

The Tumba Vacas identity reflects that blend of influences.

The bright pink and green colors are inspired by traditional charro attire worn in la charrería, Mexico’s national sport and a cultural tradition centered around horsemanship and roping. Gold accents throughout the design represent the dazzling rope work that defines the sport.

The logo itself features an upside down cow, a playful reference to the powerful winds of Kansas and the Wind Surge identity. At the same time, it symbolizes the mindset and determination of charros, using baseball as a way to connect traditions across cultures.

Floral elements throughout the branding represent the generations of families who built traditions through hard work and perseverance. As the team described it, the flowers serve as a reminder of the seeds planted by ancestors that continue to grow through the community today.

The identity carries a message that goes beyond a baseball uniform. As the Tumba Vacas motto says, “Remember we are always one.”

Chili Buns

Then came Chili Buns in 2024.

If you grew up in Kansas, you already understand this one. Chili served with a cinnamon roll or bread is a cafeteria classic. It is Midwest comfort food at its finest. I’m not sure if this is a Kansas or a midwest thing, but anyone I’ve talked to not from here thinks it is weird.

The Wind Surge leaned fully into that nostalgia and became the Wichita Chili Buns for select games.

Joey Chestnut

In 2026, the team announced that Chili Buns weekend would take place on April 17 and 18. Competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut will be in attendance on Friday, April 17. A pair of brave fans will even have the opportunity to compete against the champ in a chili buns contest.

There is something uniquely Wichita about turning a school lunch staple into a baseball identity and inviting the greatest competitive eater of all time to participate. It is absurd in the best possible way.

Chili Buns works because it feels hyper local. IYKYK.

Honkers

Most recently, the team unveiled the Wichita Honkers in early 2026. You can see goose inspired branding, a nod to the Canada geese that frequently claim sidewalks, parks, and occasionally traffic lanes throughout the city.

Anyone who has waited for a flock to slowly cross the street understands the inspiration.

The Honkers identity turns a shared city experience into something celebratory. The logo has attitude. The name is memorable. It feels like a wink at every Wichitan who has ever lost a standoff with a goose.

It is another example of the team drawing from everyday local life and turning it into baseball theater.

The Bigger Picture

When you line these up chronologically, a pattern emerges.

  • Turbo Tubs leaned into the history and the weird parts of Wichita

  • Tumba Vacas celebrated culture.

  • Chili Buns honored comfort food nostalgia.

  • Honkers captured a common Wichita experience.

Each alter ego is rooted in something real about this city. None of them feel random. They feel like inside jokes that the whole community gets to be part of.

Wichita waited a long time for affiliated baseball to return. What we have now is not just a stadium and a team. It is an organization that understands that summer baseball is about memory making as much as it is about wins and losses.

And that is something worth embracing. Peep the full calendar here and get your tickets today!
