Iconic Neighborhoods of Wichita

Wichita has its fair share of iconic neighborhoods.

Some of these are more well-known or may carry their own stereotypes.

I mistakenly called Bleckley Drive (the one that floods really bad) part of College Hill and was promptly (thank you, readers) corrected that it was not part of College Hill, but rather Crown Heights.

This sent me straight to the class room (internet) to learn where the boundaries actually lie.

This will have to be part of a bigger series of deep dives because there are actually quite a few neighborhoods in Wichita.

Enough gibber gabber, let’s dive in.

Neighborhoods of Wichita

Zoomed in a little bit, but click the image and see a full map

What do you think of when I say some of the following?

  • College Hill

  • Crown Heights (North and South)

  • Riverside

  • Delano

  • Eastborough

  • Planeview

  • Downtown

  • Old Town

  • SoCe

  • Courtland

  • Forest Hills

  • Rockhurst

I imagine some of these, some bring you memories and some you’ve never heard of.

If you’d like to see a full map lay out of what neighborhood is what, click the image above or click here.

We will focus on just a couple of these neighborhoods today. Each of them likely needs its own deep dive at some point. Like we did with Eastborough. Today we are sticking with the east side (I know, I know, picking favorites, blahblahblah) - we will get to other parts of town, but clearly I don’t even know the boundaries over here.

College Hill

Arguably one of the most Wichita of the classic Wichita neighborhoods, College Hill has been described as “a sought-after neighborhood with a notable history, beautiful homes, and a vibrant community”.

Homes.com

College Hill is located between Central Avenue (on the North) and 54 / Kellogg (on the South) and between Hillside St (to the west) and Oliver Avenue (to the East).

There are just under 5000 people who live in College Hill (as of 2016).

It is named College Hill because back in the 1880s, a Methodist College was proposed to go in the development at Douglas and Rutan, but they decided to instead build a bit further south in Winfield and became what is now known as Southwestern College.

College Hill is known for the pride of those who live there, the houses that have character and are far from cookie cutter, College Hill Park, iconic buildings and areas like Crown Uptown Theatre and Clifton Square, and so much more.

Crown Heights (North and South)

Crown Heights is split into North and South. Both are bordered on West and East by Oliver and Edgemoor, while the North is sandwiched between Central and Douglas and the South sits between Douglas and Kellogg.

Crown Heights has a population of just over 2000 people. Similar to College Hill (and often confused as part of it…or maybe that’s just me…), it is a sought after place to live for young professionals, families, or pretty much anyone.

It was built in 1907 when two brothers immigrated from Lebanon to Wichita and built a big ole duplex to house their whole family.

Quick pause - I went to school out in Andover and one of my good friends was Lebanese, but I had no idea until college / after college how many people from Lebanon lived in Wichita. It’s incredible and I love how diverse Wichita is.

Back to the story..

The house they built became known as the Frank and Harvey Ablah House and is a historic landmark.

You might also recognize this house, or the red piano, from a little video we made that went viral and made us a few friends with legacy media. đź‘‹

College Hill and Crown Heights (both parts) would be considered safe areas to live in Wichita.

Other Neighborhood Information

I’m going to keep today short and sweet, but I will leave you with a few other resources.

Let us know what neighborhood(s) you’d like for us to cover next! Sleepy Hollow? SoCe? Delano? Riverside?

p.s. I know how passionate College Hill people are about College Hill, so please take it easy on me if I got something wrong.

What do you want to see us go deep on in a future deep dive?

Quick Rundown

That's it for today!

If you enjoyed today, share this email with someone who should move back to Wichita.

Thanks!
