Good morning!
School is about to start back up for local kiddos. Let’s have a great school year, Wichita.

Let’s get to it!

(Another) Downtown Grocery Store?

Courtesy Illustration
Movement Musick recently said they’re working with Price Chopper to bring a (much needed) grocery store to downtown.
Now it seems another downtown grocery store is in the works. This one is part of Union Station and honestly the timing of both of these is great with the new Wichita Biomedical Campus set to open next year.

Wichita Wants

With the upcoming Cheesecake Factory, the Eagle dove into various things that people have expressed interest in ( and Wichita subsequently got) like Trader Joe’s, Nordstrom Rack, Dave & Busters, etc.
What is on your 2026 wish list?
Shake Shack? Apple Store?
Are you excited for Cheesecake Factory?
Top Car Dealerships
Can you guess the top automobile dealerships in Wichita based on total units sold in 2025?
NONPROFIT
Brand 316
Shoutout to local nonprofit Brand 316 who works inside Kansas correctional facilities and gets them ready for post-incarceration life. They also help connect people with housing after prison.

Together with The Podcast Room
Have you always wanted to start a podcast, but don’t know where to start?
Let’s stop you right there.
Call Troy at The Podcast Room and let the Trussell Media Studios team take care of you.
All you have to do is show up and chat. What better time than the new year to start a new habit?

CIVIL
Cooling Centers
The City of Wichita is offering 14 free cooling centers at libraries, recreation centers and neighborhood resource centers for residents looking to escape the extreme heat. From Monday, August 10 through Thursday, August 13, Wichita Transit will also provide free round-trip rides to cooling centers through one-time vouchers available on buses or at the Transit Center.
Solar Farm(s)
Before the MLB instituted the pitch clock, the average 9-inning game lasted ~3 hours and 4 minutes. Now they’re just 2 hours and 40 minutes.
This is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, but I did want to put it in context that the meeting which took place at the Sedgwick County Commission Chambers took over 11 hours in which the result was two major solar projects being denied.
140th Birthday

Courtesy Photo
While we’re talking birthdays, Happy 140th Birthday to the Wichita Fire Department which will celebrate with cake at each of the 22 stations in Wichita on Sunday, August 23rd from 2 - 4pm!
Security System
School is about to kick off. In Goddard, that comes with a new visitor system called Raptor where everyone will have to show their govt ID. Honestly I figured most places already did this?
Plaque Stolen
I have a feeling the type of person who would steal the bronze plaque from the historic Minisa Bridge (cough scumbag cough) doesn’t overlap with the audience of these newsletters, but just in case - don’t be a jive turkey, just go give it back.
LOCAL
Pyro Drone Show

I am one of the biggest advocates of Drone Light Shows after seeing it at Exploration Place the last couple of years.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some fireworks, I am American after all. But it feels like the future when you see 200+, 400+, whoever many drones turn into a Dinosaur, Spaceship, or Keeper of the Plains.
The Wichita Drone Light Festival is coming back September 25 - 27, this time with PYRO drones which really seems like the future coming together with fire which everyone loves. There will be 500 drones this year and a live score performed by a string quartet led by former Wichita Symphony Orchestra concertmaster John Harrison.
August 22nd
August 22nd is gearing up to be a busy day and I really don’t want to hear anyone say there is nothing going on:
Kansas Aviation Museum is hosting Flight Club where you can explore global cuisine from around the world right here in Wichita
The First Annual Wichita Forever Fest consisting of only local musicians and artists (100+ of them) at multiple venues
4 The City Block Party hosted by our friends Jackstacks and DJ4theWin at the Wichita Boathouse!
Are you middle class?
What does middle class mean in Kansas?
Re-Accreditation
Old Cowtown Museum has earned reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition for museums and a status it has maintained since 2001. Of roughly 33,000 museums nationwide, only about 1,100 are accredited, including just 11 in Kansas.
Century II Needs
The replace / repair / save Century II conversation has gone quiet lately, but that hasn’t made the needs go away.
About 5 years ago, ASM Global (now called Legends Global) took over the management of Century II which held 151 events in 2025.
A few things the GM noted about the facility:
It’s old and not getting any younger
doesn’t meet modern audience expectations - including a lack of concert hall aisles
Holiday Inn Sniper

Until I dove into the history of the Garvey Center (formerly known as the Holiday Inn), I had no idea there was once a sniper attack from up there.
Now there is a documentary coming out to tell that story on the 50th anniversary of this tragedy.
Andover Days
Mark your calendars for Greater Andover Days kicking off 10/1!
Power 50
The WBJ puts out a lot of great lists, but this is a new one I hadn’t seen - the Power 50.
Pretty awesome to see many of my friends names on there! Do you know anyone?
