More Snow & Snow Glow

Snowpocalypse 2025 has been one for the books.

Wichita recorded 3.6 inches of snow at the airport over the weekend which led to closings all over, from schools to businesses.

Then we continued to get more last night (the best, fluffy kind for making a snowman and snowballs).

There is no more snow on the 10 day forecast, and it will warm up over the weekend a bit (39 tomorrow) and into the 40s next week.

That doesn’t mean the fun has to stop though!

Snow Glow is a night to remember at the Mid-America All-Indian Museum where the museum, Wichita Park & Recreation, City of Wichita, and Wichita Snow Bros all collaborate to make for some great memories.

Admission is $15 for ages 3 and up, BYOS (Bring Your Own Sled) and you can come sled, listen to music from a live DJ, see an LED light show and grab some food truck food while you warm up by a fire pit.

Other fun weather facts from our city:

  • Owners / occupants are responsible for removing snow if you live next to a sidewalk or alley - although there is no deadline (unless you live downtown)

  • The City of Wichita focuses snow removal on 1500 lane miles of emergency routes and major arterials

  • Then the focus shifts to secondary arterials and residential school access streets

  • The state maintains federal and state roadways like K96, I-135, I-235 and Kellogg.

  • On average, Wichita uses about 1,000 tons of salt-sand mix per event

80 Miles of Bike Lanes

We will dive into this further, but the City of Wichita wants to add 80 miles of bike lanes over the next 10 years.

There are already several in town and this will help connect the existing ones.

Homeless Outreach

The Wichita City Council executed a split vote (4-3) in favor of changing the “illegal camping rules” in Wichita.

The city is now allowed to clear out camps (mainly homeless encampments) right away if it is on a sidewalk, near a bridge, in front of a doorway, or at a bus shelter rather than the previous 72 hour notice rule. If it is not in one of those specified spots, 48 hour notice will be given.

Figure Skating

It is a great time to be a fan of ice skating in Wichita.

Skatefest

Skatefest is TOMORROW from 10am to 2pm at the Wichita Ice Center, come out and skate with OLYMPIAN Gracie Gold! Registration is free, but I would register ASAP.

U.S. Figure Skating Championships

The U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be hosted at INTRUST Bank Arena from January 20 - 26. Get your tickets today!

Wichita Festivals

There are a few big announcements coming from Wichita Festivals this week:

  1. BreAnna Monk is the new president and CEO - Congrats BreAnna!

  2. Terry Twomey was announced as the winner of the 2025 Riverfest Poster and Artwork contest*. Congrats Terry! People seem to love it! What do you think?

  3. We announced we are partnering with Wichita by EB and Manager to Create collectively as the Kansas Media Collective to help take Riverfest to the next level! If you want to learn more about working with us at KMC, check out the site!
