Or is it too good to be true?

Together With
Good morning, Wichita! This is the Wichita Life Update, the newsletter tha feels like peeling the plastic off a brand-new phone screen.
Let’s get to it!

Downtown Grocery Store

There are a few things that people never stop asking for in Wichita:
Cheesecake Factory (✅)
Riverfront Restaurants (TBD)
And one of the biggest that will soon be a reality, a downtown grocery store.
Wichita has several pockets of ‘food deserts’ where areas of town do not have access to fresh fruit and veggies, but instead they typically just have a Dollar General or similar. Nothing against DG, we shop there, but they typically don’t have the fresh food you need to eat a healthy diet.
Nonprofit Movement Musick has previously been in the news for buying the Shirkmere Apartments, Scottish Rite Center and more to build a music district.
Now they are looking to open a 30,000 sq-ft in partnership with the Queen family behind the Price Chopper brand.
The nearest grocery store to downtown is 2 miles away.

Together with the Wichita Wind Surge
It is a Windy Wind Surge Weekend folks and they have some fantastic giveaways you don’t want to miss:
7/10 @ 7:05pm - Princess and Pirates Night (and post-game fireworks)
7/11 @ 6:05pm - Honkers Crossing Jersey
7/12 @ 1:05pm - Tubby Youth Jersey
C’mon out to the ballpark, it is always a great time!

LOCAL BUSINESS
Opening
Chilaquiles, Tacos & More - 612 e Douglas across from Naftzger Park - Now Open
Companion Food Truck for Night Owl Cafe called Night Owl - Opening August 1 to serve late night eats
Sold!
Mu-mu-mu-mudslidesss, c’mon baby don’t be shy…
If you’ve been in Wichita for any amount of time, you know the jingle. Now after almost 50 years of ownership, the Steven brothers have sold off Spangles to the Hamideh family.
Mr Mc’s Market
Speaking of food deserts, Mr Mc’s Market is trying to fix that issue as well.
As part of the city-funded, WSU administered program called the Health Corner Store Initiative, Quantin McIntosh brings fresh fruits and veggies to sell at the market located at 21st St and I-135 in the former P&P Seed and Bait building.
Tommy’s Apizza
Tommy’s Apizza has been a hit, so much so they can’t keep up with the demand and keep running out of dough.
Free Roof for a Vet
Shoutout to Farha Roofing who is hosting their 14th annual Free Roof for a Veteran Giveaway!
Applications are now open until July 31st. This isn’t just so you can get a free roof, if you or someone you know is a veteran who truly needs a new roof, please apply or nominate them today.
NONPROFIT
Meals on Wheels
If you have some free time this summer, go help out Meals on Wheels.
They are in desperate need of help as they deliver lunch to 800 homebound seniors every weekday.

CIVIL
Budget Talk
Who actually wants to talk about budgets? Although they are important, most people’s eyes gloss over when you mention it whether it is personal or for an organization.
The Wichita Board of Education is inviting the community in to build your own budget via a simulator to understand the complexity.
Speaking of budget, the Library is requesting an additional $1.4 million in funding to overcome an already 25% staffing shortage among other things or hours will likely be cut.
Ramp Closed
If you plan to travel westbound K-96 to Southbound I-135 or southbound I-135/235 ramp to eastbound K-96, they close Saturday AM.
Vandalism
This is why we can’t have nice things.
We have cool, niche, dedicated organizations like the Great Plains Transportation Museum and then some idiots go and cause $10,000 worth of damage. Idiots.
Enrollment has Started
If your kids go to Wichita Public Schools, online and in-person enrollment is open for grades 1 - 12.
LOCAL
New King on Campus
I’m not saying we have one of the best zoos in the country….but I’m not NOT saying that…
Sedgwick County Zoo continues to get better and better and the newest addition?
Ferdinand the 34-year-old King vulture. Have I ever heard of a king vulture before? No, but it does sound cool.
Alex Rodriguez visits Wichita
Wichita is known to be a stop for a few celebrities from time to time. We have Harrison Ford and everyone knows that story (and how it’s likely over ❤️🩹). We have Kelsey Grammer.
The newest and very random guest is former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez who is in town since his daughter is performing at Music Theatre Wichita. They stopped at Belmont btw.
Native Foods and Wellness Festival
Come out to the celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mid-America All-Indian Museum with some Native health dishes on July 11th at 1pm.
Sunflower Summer
Sunflower Summer is back and offers free admission to more than 230 Kansas attractions!
Badminton Capital
We were coming back in town earlier this week and after we landed, I noticed a couple of kids with what looked liked 2-3 tennis racket handles sticking out of their bags.
As I walked towards baggage claim, I saw a sign welcoming people to the U.S. Junior National Championships of Badminton. Wichita continues to step it up with hosting the top level of so many sports.
Oh and we also host some of the top youth soccer while we’re at it.
Sedgwick County Fair
I’ve been to the Kansas State Fair (met Selena Gomez there, but that’s a story for another day), Riverfest, Andover Days, and many other local festivals, but I have never been to the Sedgwick County Fair.
Events are rolling out in Cheney at the fairgrounds. Here is what to expect.
